Friends is undoubtedly one of the most re-run shows of all time. Making its debut in 1999 and concluding in 2004, this NBC sitcom is one of the most celebrated television series of all time. In fact, the May 6th finale in 2004 was watched by 52.5 million Americans, putting it at number four for the most-watched series finale in television history. But the finale is far from over. Now, Friends will continue to be re-run on the WB, TBS, as well as NBC networks on a consistent basis. Thank god they won’t be ruining it with a movie. For all you Friends fanatics out there, here are some interesting facts about some very memorable episodes.
The reason why Ross’s marriage to Emily was a no go was actually because the actress Helen Baxendale was pregnant when she was cast. First she wore a corset, but later they had to only show her from the neck down.
Throughout the entirety of the series, 27 episode titles referenced Rachel, 23 of them referenced Ross, 15 Joey, 10 Chandler, 10 referenced Phoebe, and 8 included Monica’s name.
Ursula was a waitress that first appeared on the NBC sitcom “Mad About You.” It wasn’t originally in the script, but they decided to include Ursula as Phoebe’s twin who was the same waitress as a way to explain why Lisa Kudrow was appearing on two separate shows on the same network as part of the same Thursday night line-up.
Although it appears to be set in the Greenwich Village in Manhattan, New York, as the story takes place here, the series was actually filmed in California. No scenes of the friends were ever shot in New York, even the opening fountain scene was shot in California. The exterior shot of their apartment building was located at Grove and Bedford streets in Greenwich Village.
Jennifer Anniston and Brad Pitt checked into hotels under the names “Mr. and Mrs. Ross Vegas.”
Monica gets such a short hair cut in the fourth season because she had just got done filming Scream in which she had chunky red highlights which were not exactly fitting to her character.
David Schwimmer who plays Ross was originally offered Will Smith’s role in “Men in Black.”
Carol’s obstetrician in “The Birth” episode was played by David Schwimmer’s real best friend Jonathon Silverman.
Reese Witherspoon was originally supposed to star in six episodes, but apparently Jennifer Aniston disliked her and asked the producers to fire her off.
David Schwimmer directed several episodes of Friends.
